Corky’s Cupboard, the Emporia State food pantry, was created for students struggling with food insecurity. It was established in 2014 by the Basic Needs Coalition and has been growing ever since. According to Emporia State's newly hired basic needs coordinator Cale Bolen, some changes to the cupboard are coming very soon.
“There are plans in the works of, yes, expanding the Cupboard,” Bolen said.
No details about how or when the pantry will be expanded have been released yet. But according to Bolen, students won't have to wait for too long.
“I think there will be news coming out relatively soon about that which is really exciting and I look forward to being able to share more information about that.”
Bolen’s position was created at the end of last year by President Hush after a letter was written from the basic needs coalition explaining the need for a leader. Bolen is an ESU alumni and graduated with a political science degree in 2019.
“I kind of always knew that I wanted to work at a university. I remember my first two or three weeks here at Emporia State,” Bolen said. “I kind of already started thinking about ways that I could kind of get into the field of higher education.”
The pantry’s hours have been expanded which gives students more time to grab food. And after ESU’s annual “Can the Bods” competition, more items have been donated to the cupboard to help keep it stocked.
“We're facing a lot of constraints right now just because of how many students we’re seeing and with the money we do have currently but Can the Bods has done a lot to kind of alleviate some of those concerns,” Bolen said.
Nadia Valdez, freshman biology major, began working for the cupboard this year.
“As an international student, sometimes our tuition is more expensive than regular students so sometimes we don't have the money to buy food,” Valdez said.
For students struggling with food insecurity, the cupboard is open Mondays and Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
